Baal, owner, lord, master; Canaanite storm god whose title became a proper name
This common noun meaning 'owner' or 'master' applied to possessions, land, or relationships (especially marriage), but became infamous as the title-turned-name of Canaan's chief deity. Baal controlled storms, rain, and fertility, directly competing with Yahweh's role. Israel's temptation to worship Baal reached crisis during Ahab's reign, culminating in Elijah's contest on Carmel. The prophets condemned Baal worship as covenant adultery. Biblical writers sometimes deliberately distorted Baal names, replacing the element with 'bosheth' (shame). Yet 'baal' retained its ordinary meaning as owner or husband in secular contexts.
