Beasts, cattle, or livestock — a collective noun for domesticated animals, especially beasts of burden
A collective masculine noun (בְּעִיר) denoting domesticated animals or livestock in general, with cognates across Semitic languages (Aramaic, Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic — where it specifically denotes a camel). In Hebrew it covers beasts of burden such as donkeys (Gen 45:17, referring back to the brothers' asses) as well as cattle more broadly. It appears in legal texts governing livestock damage (Exod 22:4-5) and in wilderness narrative where Israel pleads for water for their livestock (Num 20:4, 8, 11).
Senses
1. beasts, cattle, livestock — Domesticated animals or livestock viewed collectively, including beasts of burden and cattle. In Genesis 45:17, Joseph tells his brothers to load their בְּעִיר (donkeys, cf. 44:3, 13). In the Covenant Code (Exod 22:4-5), the term appears in a law about grazing damage. In Numbers 20:4, 8, 11, it covers the congregation's livestock needing water at Meribah, and in Psalm 78:48 it parallels flocks destroyed by hail. The Spanish ganado and French bétail both capture the collective 'livestock' sense. 7×
