Bani — a Hebrew name meaning 'built,' borne by multiple Levites, warriors, and clan heads
Bani ('built,' possibly short for Benayahu, 'the LORD has built') is shared by a remarkable number of individuals, most connected to Levitical service or postexilic leadership. One Bani was among David's warriors, called 'the Gadite' (2 Sam 23:36). Several Levites named Bani appear in postexilic contexts: reading the Law with Ezra (Neh 8:7), leading confession (Neh 9:4-5), and sealing the covenant (Neh 10:14). Clan heads named Bani appear among those with foreign wives (Ezra 10:29, 34). French interestingly renders some instances as 'fils de,' reflecting overlap with the common noun ben ('son').
Senses
1. Bani — A Hebrew proper name (bani, 'built') borne by multiple individuals: (1) one of David's warriors, 'the Gadite' (2 Sam 23:36; cf. 1 Chr 11:38); (2) Levites active in postexilic worship, Torah-reading, and covenant-sealing (1 Chr 6:46; Neh 3:17; 8:7; 9:4-5; 10:14); and (3) heads of return-era families (Ezra 2:10; 10:29, 34). French 'fils-de' in some contexts reflects confusion with the patronymic ben. 15×
