Son (Aramaic) — the Aramaic equivalent of Hebrew בֵּן, used in Ezra and Daniel for filial and metaphorical sonship
The Aramaic noun בַּר (bar) is the cognate of Hebrew בֵּן ('son'), appearing in the Aramaic sections of Ezra and Daniel. In Ezra, it functions in genealogical formulas: 'Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel' (Ezra 5:2), 'Jeshua the son of Jozadak' (Ezra 5:2), and 'the sons of Israel' (Ezra 6:16). Its most celebrated occurrence is Daniel 7:13, where 'one like a son of man' (כְּבַר אֱנָשׁ) approaches the Ancient of Days — a phrase that became foundational for New Testament Christology. Daniel 6:24 uses it for literal sons cast into the lions' den. Spanish 'hijo' and French 'fils' both render the straightforward filial meaning.

Senses
1. son (Aramaic) The Aramaic word for 'son,' functioning identically to Hebrew בֵּן in patronymic chains and broader relational expressions. Used in genealogical formulas throughout Ezra (5:1-2; 6:14) and for 'the sons of Israel' collectively (Ezra 6:16). In Daniel, it appears in the epochal vision of 'one like a son of man' (כְּבַר אֱנָשׁ, Dan 7:13), a figure who receives universal dominion from the Ancient of Days — foundational to messianic interpretation. Also used for literal offspring (Dan 5:22; 6:24) and in the prayer formula 'sons of the captivity' (Ezra 6:16). Spanish 'hijo' and English 'son' are the standard renderings. 11×
