Beth-eden, Aramean city or region; possibly biblical name for Bit-Adini in Mesopotamia
Amos pronounces judgment on this Aramean location, likely the region known in Assyrian records as Bit-Adini along the Euphrates. The name means 'house of Eden' or 'house of pleasure,' possibly preserving an ancient toponym related to the word for delight. Later tradition sometimes identified it with 'the children of Eden' mentioned in Isaiah and Kings. The geographical identification remains somewhat uncertain, though the Mesopotamian connection seems most probable. Amos's oracle situates it among Damascus's allied territories subject to divine judgment.
