1. contempt, scorn — Abstract noun denoting contempt, scorn, or disdain, found predominantly in wisdom and poetic literature. Used of the contempt that accompanies wickedness (Prov 18:3), the scorn directed at the righteous by the proud (Ps 123:3-4, הַבּוּז), the contempt God pours on nobles (Ps 107:40, Job 12:5, 21), and the reproach and contempt removed from the psalmist (Ps 119:22). Also appears in Gen 38:23 where Judah fears becoming 'a disgrace' (לָבוּז) over the Tamar incident, and in Prov 12:8 where the perverse is 'despised' (לָבוּז). The singular meaning 'contempt/scorn' unifies all occurrences; variation arises only from prepositional and conjunctive constructions. Multilingual glosses are unanimous: Arabic ازْدِراء/احتِقار (contempt/disdain), Korean 멸시 (scorn), Hindi तिरस्कार/अपमान (contempt/insult), Spanish desprecio (contempt), French mepris (scorn). 11×
