An Aramaic verb appearing exclusively in the book of Daniel, where visions from God produce visceral terror. The Pael stem captures the psychological shock of divine revelation: Nebuchadnezzar's thoughts 'alarmed him' (Dan 4:19), and Daniel himself was 'dismayed' by visions of the four beasts (Dan 7:15, 28). Belshazzar's terror at the handwriting on the wall is described with the same root -- his face changed and his lords were 'alarmed' (Dan 5:6, 9-10). The Hitpael infinitive develops into an adverbial sense 'in haste,' used when Arioch brings Daniel 'in haste' before the king (Dan 2:25) and when Darius rushes 'in haste' to the lions' den (Dan 6:19) -- urgency that springs from alarm.

Arioch brings Daniel 'in haste' before Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 2:25), officials rush to the fiery furnace (Dan 3:24), and Darius hurries to the lions' den at dawn (Dan 6:19).
