ishshah -- a fire offering; a sacrifice presented to Yahweh by burning on the altar
The masculine noun ishshah designates an offering made by fire -- a sacrifice consumed on the altar before Yahweh. The term is essentially restricted to the Priestly legislation of the Pentateuch, appearing most densely in Leviticus and Numbers in connection with burnt offerings, grain offerings (minhah), and the showbread with its frankincense (Lev 24:7). Its etymology was traditionally linked to esh ('fire'), though some scholars relate it to a root meaning 'gift' or 'tribute.' Outside the Pentateuch it occurs sparingly in Deuteronomy 18:1, Joshua 13:14, and 1 Samuel 2:28, always in reference to the priestly share of sacrificial offerings. Spanish ofrenda-de-fuego, French offrande-par-le-feu, and German Feuer-Opfergabe all preserve the fire-sacrifice concept transparently.

Senses
1. fire offering, offering by fire A technical cultic term for a sacrifice presented to Yahweh by fire upon the altar, used predominantly in the Priestly legislation of Leviticus and Numbers. It covers various offering types: animal burnt offerings (Lev 1:9, 13, 17), grain offerings (Lev 2:11), and even the showbread's frankincense memorial (Lev 24:7, 9). Outside the Pentateuch, Deut 18:1 and 1 Sam 2:28 reference the priests' entitlement to these fire offerings. Spanish ofrenda-de-fuego, French offrande-par-le-feu, and German Feuer-Opfergabe all render it with transparent fire-sacrifice imagery across 65 occurrences. 65×
