Arumah, a place name; Abimelech's residence near Shechem (Judg 9:41)
Arumah served as Abimelech's base during his conflict with Shechem. Located near that city, it may be identical with Rumah in 2 Kings. Proposed identifications include el-Ormah, southeast of Shechem. The name possibly means 'height' or 'citadel.' From Arumah, Abimelech could monitor Shechem and mount his final devastating attack. The strategic location enabled his brutal suppression of the rebellion.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Judges 9:41 reports: 'Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives so they could not live in Shechem.' The phrase 'in Arumah' establishes Abimelech's base outside but near Shechem. Uniform transliteration (English/Spanish/French/German all use 'Arumah' or close variants with preposition) confirms it as a distinct settlement. The geographical detail shows how the fratricide king ruled through strategic positioning rather than residing among his subjects. 1×
