ephod (priestly garment)
1. ephod (priestly garment) A distinctive priestly vestment (אֵפוֹד/אֵפֹד) worn over the robe of the high priest, described in detail in Exodus 28-29 and 39. It was made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn with fine linen, had two shoulder pieces joined together, and bore two onyx stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes. The breastpiece of judgment was attached to it. The ephod served as the garment to which the Urim and Thummim were attached for divine consultation. All occurrences with the definite article (הָאֵפֹד/הָאֵפוֹד) in the Pentateuch (Exod 25:7; 28:6-31; 29:5; 35:9, 27; 39:2-22; Lev 8:7) refer to this specific high-priestly vestment. The indefinite occurrences in Judges (8:27; 17:5; 18:14) and Samuel (1 Sam 2:18, 28; 14:3; 22:18; 23:6; 2 Sam 6:14; 1 Chr 15:27) include both references to the priestly ephod used in seeking oracles and to the ephod Gideon made. Hosea 3:4 lists the ephod alongside other cultic objects. All four clusters (with/without article, with conjunction, with preposition) represent the same cultic garment, differing only in syntactic context and definiteness. 49×
