N-fs  |  32× in 1 sense
ship, fleet, seagoing vessel — a large watercraft for maritime trade, warfare, or transport
Oniyyah (plural oniyyot) designates a seagoing ship, appearing 32 times across the Hebrew Bible. The word captures Israel's uneasy relationship with the sea: Jacob's blessing notes that Zebulun shall dwell by the shore of ships (Gen 49:13), but Israel was never a seafaring power in its own right. Solomon's fleet at Ezion-geber, built in partnership with Hiram of Tyre, brought gold from Ophir (1 Kgs 9:26-28; 10:22), and when Jehoshaphat tried to replicate the venture, his ships were wrecked (1 Kgs 22:48). The prophetic tradition uses ships as symbols of human pride brought low — Isaiah's oracle against 'all the ships of Tarshish' (Isa 2:16) and Ezekiel's ship-allegory for Tyre (Ezek 27:9, 25-29). Jonah boards an oniyyah at Joppa to flee from YHWH (Jon 1:3-5). Note that the BDB excerpt shown in the prompt corresponds to a different homograph (anah III, 'to meet'); the actual noun oniyyah derives from a separate root.

Senses
1. ship, seagoing vessel A seagoing vessel used for trade, military expeditions, or transport. Covers Solomon's Ophir fleet (1 Kgs 9:26-28; 10:22), Jehoshaphat's wrecked ships (1 Kgs 22:48), and Jonah's flight vessel (Jon 1:3-5). Prophetic imagery deploys ships as emblems of commercial pride and vulnerability — Isaiah's 'ships of Tarshish' (Isa 2:16; 23:1, 14) and Ezekiel's allegory for Tyre (Ezek 27:9, 25-29). Deuteronomy 28:68 threatens return to Egypt 'in ships' as covenant curse. 32×
