The latter part or end; outcome, fate; future hope; posterity or remnant; the farthest extremity of a place
A feminine noun meaning 'after-part' or 'end,' built from the root ʾaḥar 'after, behind.' It moves fluidly between temporal, moral, and spatial registers. Temporally, it marks the latter days or the close of an era — a key term in prophetic eschatology (Gen 49:1; Dan 10:14). Morally, it denotes the final outcome or fate that awaits a person or nation, where the 'end of the wicked' stands in sharp contrast to the 'future and hope' promised to the faithful (Jer 29:11; Prov 23:18). In a handful of passages it extends to the people who come after — posterity and remnant — and in one memorable verse (Ps 139:9) it reaches to the spatial 'uttermost part' of the sea.
Senses
1. outcome, fate, end result — The outcome, fate, or final result of a person, nation, or course of action. This is the most frequent sense, carrying strong moral and judicial overtones: 'consider their latter end' (Deut 32:29), 'the end of the wicked' (Ps 73:17), or a fool's words whose 'end is madness' (Eccl 10:13). Spanish uses both 'fin' and 'postrería,' while French 'avenir' interestingly tilts toward 'what comes after' rather than mere cessation. The emphasis is on consequence — what everything amounts to in the end. 26×

2. latter period, end of days — The latter period or final phase of a timeframe, especially in eschatological and prophetic contexts: 'in the latter days' (beʾaḥarît hayyāmîm, Gen 49:1; Deut 4:30; Dan 10:14). This temporal sense shades into apocalyptic expectation — the decisive period when God's purposes will be revealed. German 'Ende' and 'Zukunft' both appear in the glosses, reflecting the dual character of closure and futurity. Deut 11:12 uses it simply for the year's end, showing the range from mundane to cosmic. 21×

3. future, hope — A future or hopeful expectation, especially the assured good outcome God promises. Jer 29:11 — 'plans for a future (ʾaḥarît) and a hope (tiqwâ)' — is the paradigmatic verse, where the word is parallel to 'hope' itself. Proverbs pairs it similarly: 'there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off' (Prov 23:18; 24:14). French consistently renders this sense as 'avenir' (future), distinguishing it from the fate-judgment overtone of sense 1. 7×

4. remnant, survivors — The remnant or survivors left after catastrophe or judgment. In Ezek 23:25 the 'remainder' of a people face further punishment, and Amos 9:1 speaks of the last survivors. This concrete, collective sense — the people who are 'left over at the end' — is a natural extension from temporal ending to the residue that remains. Spanish 'resto' and 'posteridad' capture this collective-survivor meaning. 3×

5. posterity, descendants — Posterity or descendants — the people who come after someone, their future lineage. Ps 109:13 prays that an enemy's posterity be cut off; Dan 11:4 says a kingdom will not pass to 'his posterity.' The sense moves from temporal end-point to the human beings who occupy that future. The overlap with sense 4 (remnant) is close, but here the emphasis falls on genealogical continuation rather than survival after disaster. 3×

6. sense 6 — The spatial extremity or farthest end of a place. Ps 139:9 — 'if I take the wings of the dawn and settle at the uttermost part (ʾaḥarît) of the sea' — is the sole clear instance. Spanish 'confines' (boundaries, far reaches) and English 'end of' preserve this rare spatial usage, where the temporal root metaphor ('what comes after') extends to physical distance: the place that lies beyond everything else. 1×
