Derived from the root z-k-r ('to remember'), this feminine noun refers specifically to the handful of flour, oil, and frankincense taken from a grain offering (minhah) and burned on the altar as a symbolic 'reminder' before God. It appears exclusively in priestly legislation (Leviticus 2, 5, 6; Numbers 5), always in close association with 'isheh (fire offering). The Spanish 'porcion-memorial' and German 'Gedenkanteil' both capture the dual notion of a portion that also memorializes -- a physical token that ascends as smoke to bring the offerer's devotion before the Lord.
