1. waistcloth, belt, loincloth — A garment or band worn around the waist or loins, variously translated as 'waistcloth,' 'belt,' 'loincloth,' or 'girdle.' All occurrences refer to the same type of garment with no semantic distinction between the various morphological and syntactic forms. The most prominent usage is Jeremiah's linen loincloth parable (Jer 13:1-11), where the prophet is commanded to buy an ezor (13:1), wear it (13:2), hide it at the Euphrates (13:4,6), retrieve it ruined (13:7), and hear its interpretation -- as this loincloth clings to the waist, so God had made Israel cling to himself (13:10-11). Also used of the Messianic king's belt of righteousness and faithfulness (Isa 11:5 'righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins'), the warrior's belt of the Assyrian army (Isa 5:27), Elijah's leather belt (2 Kgs 1:8), the stripping of belts from kings (Job 12:18 'he loosens the belt of kings'), and the belt on warriors in Ezekiel's vision (Ezek 23:15). Multilingual glosses consistently refer to a waist-garment: Arabic mintaqah/hizam, German Guertel 'belt,' Korean ddi, Spanish cinturon/cinto, Hindi kamarbandh/patti/peta, French ceinture. 14×
