Porch, vestibule, portico; the covered entrance hall of a temple or palace
An architectural term for the entrance hall or covered portico of an important building, appearing almost exclusively in descriptions of Solomon's temple and palace, and in Ezekiel's visionary temple. The porch of the temple (1 Kgs 6:3; 7:21) served as the grand threshold between the outer courts and the holy place, a liminal space of approach to God's presence. Joel 2:17 places weeping priests 'between the porch and the altar,' a location of intense intercession. French renders it as a transliteration, while German 'Vorhalle' ('fore-hall') captures the architectural function precisely.
