Desire, longing, craving; an intense want or appetite, whether natural, royal, or divine.
The feminine noun ʾavvāh denotes a strong desire or craving, almost always appearing in the construct phrase 'the desire of (one's) soul.' In Deuteronomy it expresses the natural, morally neutral appetite for meat when living far from the sanctuary (Deut 12:15, 20, 21) and the Levite's heartfelt longing to serve at the chosen place (Deut 18:6). In 1 Samuel 23:20, it describes Saul's royal determination to seize David. Hosea 10:10 applies it to God's own purposeful will. Spanish deseo and French désir both preserve the intensity of yearning.
Senses
1. desire, longing, craving — Desire, longing, or craving — an intense inward want, typically appearing in the construct 'desire of the soul' (ʾavvat nepeš). It covers morally neutral physical appetite for food (Deut 12:15, 20, 21, 'you may slaughter and eat meat in all your gates, according to the desire of your soul'), a Levite's yearning to serve at the central sanctuary (Deut 18:6), a king's determined will (1 Sam 23:20, 'according to all the desire of your soul to come down'), and even divine purpose (Hos 10:10). Spanish deseo de and French désir both capture this range of intense longing. 7×
