χρῆσις G5540
use, usage, function, sexual intercourse
χρῆσις denotes the use or employment of something, what one does with it. It can refer to general usage, but in the New Testament it appears specifically in contexts of sexual conduct. Romans 1:26-27 uses it twice in Paul's description of humanity's rebellion against God. Verse 26 speaks of women exchanging 'natural relations (τὴν φυσικὴν χρῆσιν) for those that are contrary to nature,' and verse 27 describes men likewise abandoning 'natural relations (τὴν φυσικὴν χρῆσιν) with women.' Here χρῆσις refers to sexual use or intercourse, and Paul argues that same-sex relations constitute a departure from God's created design for human sexuality.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both occurrences appear in Romans 1:26-27, where Paul describes the sexual dimension of humanity's exchange of truth for lies. The 'natural χρῆσις' refers to sexual relations aligned with created design (male-female); departing from this constitutes rebellion against the Creator. The French usage preserves the sense of use or practice. Paul's argument is theological: sexual conduct is not morally neutral but reflects one's relationship with God and recognition (or rejection) of his created order. 2×
