six hundred sixty-six (or six hundred sixteen), the cryptic number of the beast
This numerical expression appears only in Revelation 13:18 as the mysterious number of the beast, one of Scripture's most debated symbols. Ancient manuscripts vary between 666 and 616, suggesting some scribes recognized the number as a cipher. Jewish and early Christian readers familiar with gematria (where letters have numerical values) would have understood this as a coded reference, possibly to a Roman emperor. The triple repetition of six, falling short of the perfect seven, may symbolize persistent human imperfection and rebellion against God.
