χειρο-ποίητος G5499
Made by hands, handmade; manufactured by human effort, often contrasted with divine or spiritual creation.
This compound adjective (cheir, 'hand' + poieo, 'to make') describes anything fashioned by human craft. In the New Testament it nearly always carries a negative or limiting connotation: God does not dwell in temples made with hands (Acts 7:48, 17:24), and Christ entered a sanctuary not made with hands (Heb 9:11). Mark 14:58 records the false charge that Jesus would destroy the handmade temple and build another 'not made with hands.' The consistent multilingual rendering—Spanish hecho a mano, French fait de main, German handgemacht—underscores the universal clarity of this concept.
Senses
1. made by hands / handmade — Constructed or manufactured by human hands, in contrast to what is divine, spiritual, or not of human origin. Stephen's speech (Acts 7:48) and Paul's Areopagus address (Acts 17:24) both insist that God does not inhabit cheiropoietos structures. In Ephesians 2:11, circumcision is described as 'made in the flesh by hands,' relativizing it against a greater spiritual reality. The Spanish hecho-a-mano and German handgemacht mirror the compound etymology perfectly. 6×
