Phyllon denotes the leaf of a tree or plant and appears in the Gospels primarily in connection with the fig tree. In Mark 11:13, Jesus sees a fig tree with leaves but no fruit—a powerful image of outward promise masking inner emptiness. The same word appears in the Olivet Discourse (Matt 24:32, Mark 13:28) where budding leaves signal that summer is near, a parable of eschatological readiness. Every major translation renders it straightforwardly: Spanish hojas, French feuilles, German Blaetter—leaves, plain and vivid.
