Phyle designates a tribe or clan defined by common descent, appearing 31 times in the New Testament with its center of gravity in Revelation. In the Gospels, Jesus promises the Twelve that they will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel (Matt 19:28; Luke 22:30), and Anna the prophetess is identified as belonging to the tribe of Asher (Luke 2:36). Paul claims the tribe of Benjamin as his pedigree (Acts 13:21; Rom 11:1; Phil 3:5). Hebrews notes that Jesus arose from Judah, a tribe to which Moses said nothing about priests (Heb 7:13-14). Revelation transforms the tribal vocabulary into a universal vision: the Lamb's redemption gathers people from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation (Rev 5:9; 7:9; 13:7; 14:6), while the 144,000 are sealed from every tribe of Israel (Rev 7:4-8). Spanish 'tribu,' French 'tribu,' and German 'Stamm' render the concept uniformly.
