V-RPM/P-VMP  |  2× in 1 sense
to burden, load down, weigh down with heavy loads
φορτίζω means to load someone down with burdens, from φορτίον ('burden, load'). Jesus uses it in Matthew 11:28 with the beautiful invitation: 'Come to me, all who are weary and burdened (πεφορτισμένοι), and I will give you rest.' He offers relief to those loaded down with heavy burdens. By contrast, in Luke 11:46, Jesus condemns the lawyers who φορτίζετε ('load down') people with burdens hard to bear, yet won't lift a finger to help. The perfect passive participle in Matthew describes a state of being weighed down; the present active in Luke describes the ongoing action of loading others.

Senses
1. sense 1 The two New Testament uses stand in stark contrast: Jesus invites the burdened to find rest (Matthew 11:28), while religious leaders actively burden others without offering help (Luke 11:46). The French chargé and Spanish cargados preserve the sense of being loaded down like a pack animal. Jesus' critique targets those who make religion a crushing weight rather than liberating grace.
