N-DFS  |  7× in 1 sense
A flame or blaze of fire; visible burning used of theophanies, eschatological judgment, and the torment of the afterlife.
Refers to the visible, luminous part of a fire — the flame itself — carrying intense theological freight in the NT. It appears in theophanic contexts where God manifests through fire: the burning bush where an angel appears 'in a flame of fire' (Acts 7:30) and the description of angels as 'flames of fire' (Heb 1:7). It also marks eschatological judgment, as when the Lord Jesus is revealed 'in flaming fire' (2 Thess 1:8) and his eyes are 'like a flame of fire' (Rev 1:14). In Luke 16:24, it names the tormenting fire of Hades. French 'flamme,' German 'Flamme,' and Spanish 'llama' all render it with equal directness.

Senses
1. flame, blaze A flame or blaze — the visible, burning portion of a fire. Used in the NT primarily in theophanic and eschatological settings: the flame of the burning bush (Acts 7:30), angels described as flames of fire (Heb 1:7), Christ revealed in flaming fire at his return (2 Thess 1:8), and his eyes like a flame (Rev 1:14). In Luke 16:24 it names the tormenting fire of Hades. French 'flamme,' German 'Flamme,' Spanish 'llama' all render it uniformly, confirming a single concrete-to-metaphorical semantic range.
