ὑποπόδ-ιον G5286
A footstool; a low stool or platform on which feet are rested, used chiefly as a metaphor for divine sovereignty.
In classical use a literal piece of furniture placed beneath the feet, but in the NT it functions almost exclusively as a theologically charged metaphor drawn from Psalm 110:1 — 'until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.' This royal image, quoted more than any other OT verse in the NT, depicts total subjugation of enemies beneath the sovereign's feet. It appears in Jesus's own argument (Luke 20:43), in Peter's Pentecost sermon (Acts 2:35), in Stephen's speech citing Isaiah (Acts 7:49, 'the earth is my footstool'), and in the Christological argument of Hebrews (Heb 1:13; 10:13). Spanish offers two renderings — 'escabel' and 'estrado' — both evoking a raised dais of authority.
Senses
1. a footstool — A footstool — literally a low support for the feet, but in the NT used almost entirely as a metaphor for divine sovereignty and the subjugation of enemies. The dominant quotation is Psalm 110:1 ('until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet'), cited in Luke 20:43, Acts 2:35, Heb 1:13, and Heb 10:13 to establish Christ's exalted reign. In Acts 7:49, quoting Isaiah 66:1, the earth itself is God's footstool. Spanish 'escabel' and 'estrado' and German 'Fußschemel' all preserve the image of a platform beneath royal feet. 7×
