τρόπος G5158
manner, way, fashion — the mode or method by which something is done
Tropos (from trepo, 'to turn') literally means a 'turn' or 'direction' and came to denote the manner or fashion in which something occurs. In the New Testament's 13 occurrences, it appears most characteristically in the comparative phrase hon tropon ('in the manner that, just as'), used by Jesus in his lament over Jerusalem ('as a hen gathers her chicks,' Matt 23:37; Luke 13:34) and by the angels at the Ascension ('in the same way as you have seen him go,' Acts 1:11). Spanish renders it 'manera/modo,' French 'maniere,' German 'Weise' — all confirming the unified sense of 'way, manner' with no splitting into separate senses.
Senses
1. manner, way — The mode, fashion, or manner in which an action is performed or an event unfolds. Most frequently occurs in the comparative construction hon tropon ('in the manner that, just as'), drawing parallels between two situations — Jesus' desire to gather Jerusalem (Matt 23:37; Luke 13:34), the manner of Christ's ascension and return (Acts 1:11), and the exodus generation's experience (Acts 7:28). Also appears in broader expressions like panti tropo ('in every way,' Phil 1:18). All 13 occurrences express this single notion of manner or mode. 13×
