synteleia -- completion, consummation; especially the eschatological end of the present age
Derived from synteleo ('to bring to completion'), synteleia denotes the final consummation or wrapping-up of a period. In the New Testament it appears almost exclusively in the eschatological phrase synteleia tou aionos ('the consummation of the age'), concentrated in Matthew's Gospel. The disciples ask Jesus on the Mount of Olives, 'What will be the sign of your coming and the synteleia of the age?' (Matt 24:3). The harvest parables of Matthew 13 explain that the angels will sort wheat from tares 'at the synteleia of the age' (Matt 13:39-40, 49). The risen Christ's final promise seals the theme: 'I am with you always, to the synteleia of the age' (Matt 28:20). Spanish consumacion, French fin, and German Vollendung each capture the note of purposeful culmination.

Senses
1. completion, consummation of an age The consummation or final completion of a period, used in the New Testament almost exclusively for the eschatological end of the present age (synteleia tou aionos). Matthew alone accounts for five of six occurrences: the parabolic harvests of Matt 13:39-40, 49, the Olivet Discourse question of Matt 24:3, and the Great Commission's closing assurance in Matt 28:20. Hebrews 9:26 rounds out the usage with Christ appearing 'at the consummation of the ages.' Spanish consumacion and German Vollendung both emphasize purposeful culmination rather than mere cessation, aligning with the theological freight of a divinely orchestrated conclusion to history.
