Council, Sanhedrin -- the Jewish governing and judicial assembly, both the supreme body in Jerusalem and local tribunals
A neuter noun denoting a council or deliberative assembly, used in the New Testament almost exclusively for the Jewish Sanhedrin -- the supreme judicial body in Jerusalem composed of chief priests, elders, and scribes. Jesus warned his disciples they would be 'delivered to councils' (Matt 10:17; Mark 13:9), using the plural to include local Jewish tribunals with disciplinary authority. The singular most often designates the Jerusalem Sanhedrin that tried Jesus (Matt 26:59; Mark 14:55; Luke 22:66) and later the apostles (Acts 4:15; 5:21, 27, 34; 6:12).
