N-AFP  |  5× in 1 sense
A large basket or hamper; used for carrying food or lowering a person, distinct from the smaller kophinos.
A large woven basket, notably distinguished in the Gospels from the smaller kophinos (G2894). When Jesus fed the four thousand, the leftovers filled seven spurides — large hampers (Matt 15:37; Mark 8:8) — and Jesus later reminds the disciples of this detail (Matt 16:10; Mark 8:20). The same word describes the basket used to lower Paul over the Damascus city wall (Acts 9:25), indicating a container large enough to hold a grown man. The Spanish translations helpfully alternate between canasta and cesta, both denoting sizable carrying vessels, while French offers both corbeille and panier.

Senses
1. sense 1 A large basket or hamper (spuris), distinctly bigger than the kophinos used in the feeding of the five thousand. All five NT occurrences cluster around two episodes: the feeding of the four thousand, where seven spurides of leftovers were collected (Matt 15:37; Mark 8:8; recalled in Matt 16:10; Mark 8:20), and Paul's dramatic escape from Damascus in a basket lowered over the wall (Acts 9:25). The basket's size — large enough to transport a person — is the defining characteristic. Spanish canasta/cesta, French corbeille/panier, and German Korb all denote capacious containers, confirming the sense of a substantial carrying vessel rather than a small hand-basket.
