Σπανία G4681
Spain, the westernmost region of the known Roman world, representing the ends of the earth
Σπανία is the Greek rendering of the Latin 'Hispania,' referring to the Iberian Peninsula at the western edge of the Roman Empire. For Paul and first-century Christians, Spain represented the farthest frontier of the known world, the completion of the geographic arc from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. In Romans 15, Paul expresses his ambition to preach where Christ has not been named, and Spain symbolizes this frontier mission. Whether Paul ever reached Spain remains historically uncertain (early tradition suggests he did), but his stated intention shows the gospel's universal, boundary-breaking momentum.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Romans 15:24 and 15:28 both mention Paul's plans to visit Spain after delivering the collection to Jerusalem. He hopes the Roman church will assist him in this westward mission. Spain here functions both as literal geographic destination and symbolic representation of gospel expansion to earth's extremities. Earlier Greek writers called it Hesperia or Iberia, but by Roman times the Latin name Hispania (Greek: Σπανία or Ἱσπανία) had become standard. 2×
