Σμύρνα G4667
Smyrna, an important coastal city in Asia Minor and one of the seven churches of Revelation
Σμύρνα (Smyrna) was a major port city on the Aegean coast of Asia Minor (modern Izmir, Turkey), renowned for its beauty, commerce, and loyalty to Rome. It was one of the seven churches addressed in Revelation 2-3, a congregation facing severe persecution and poverty despite the city's wealth. Jesus' message to Smyrna contains no rebuke—only encouragement to remain faithful even unto death, with the promise of the crown of life. The city's name coincidentally echoes the word for myrrh, and early interpreters noted the connection: myrrh is crushed to release its fragrance, just as the Smyrnan church was crushed by persecution yet remained fragrant to God.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Revelation 1:11 lists Smyrna among the seven churches John must address, and Revelation 2:8 begins the specific letter to Smyrna's angel, praising their faithfulness amid tribulation. The church's suffering was severe—likely including Jewish opposition and Roman imperial pressure. Historically, Smyrna later produced Polycarp, one of the early church's most famous martyrs. Inscriptions and coins show variant spellings (Ζμύρνα), reflecting Ionic dialect variations. 2×
