σκῆνος G4636
Tent, temporary dwelling; metaphorically the body as the soul's temporary dwelling place
Σκῆνος literally means tent or temporary shelter, but in philosophical and biblical usage it becomes a metaphor for the physical body as the temporary dwelling of the soul or spirit. Paul uses this imagery in 2 Corinthians 5 when contrasting our earthly tent-dwelling (the mortal body subject to decay) with the eternal building from God awaiting us. The tent metaphor emphasizes transience, fragility, and the pilgrim nature of earthly existence. This was common imagery in Greek philosophy (Plato, Pythagoreans) and resonates with Israel's wilderness wandering in tents before entering the promised land.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both occurrences in 2 Corinthians 5:1 and 5:4 develop the extended metaphor: we groan while in this tent, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling. Paul's language blends Platonic body-soul dualism with Jewish resurrection hope, creating a distinctly Christian eschatology. The tent image captures both the vulnerability and impermanence of mortal life while anticipating something permanent and glorious. 2×
