Ship's tackle, rigging, or gear; the equipment and apparatus used to operate a sailing vessel
During the violent storm threatening Paul's ship, the crew 'threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands' (Acts 27:19). This desperate measure followed jettisoning cargo the previous day (27:18). The term σκευή designated equipment, gear, or apparatus—in nautical context, the rigging, spare sails, tackle, or movable equipment that operates a ship. Lightening the vessel might help it ride the storm, but discarding tackle also reduced their ability to control the ship. Luke's detail shows the crew's desperation as they surrender navigational capacity to survive the immediate crisis.

Senses
1. sense 1 Acts 27:19 employs the accusative singular σκευὴν τοῦ πλοίου: 'the ship's gear/tackle.' The word broadly means equipment or apparatus (compare σκεῦος, vessel), here specified by context as nautical gear. Spanish 'aparejo,' French 'équipement,' German retains the Greek—all indicate ship's equipment. The phrase 'with their own hands' emphasizes either the crew's personal involvement or that they didn't wait for cargo handlers but desperately threw gear overboard themselves. The storm's ferocity drives progressive abandonment of everything but life itself.
