πύλη G4439
A gate or gateway, especially of a city or the temple, as a threshold of passage
Refers to a large gate or gateway, typically of a city or temple complex, functioning as a place of entry, passage, and public encounter. In Jesus' teaching, the narrow gate and wide gate stand as metaphors for the path to life and the path to destruction (Matt 7:13–14). The gates of Hades will not prevail against Christ's church (Matt 16:18). In Acts, the Beautiful Gate of the temple is where Peter heals the lame man (Acts 3:10), and the iron gate of the city opens of its own accord for the released Peter (Acts 12:10). Spanish 'puerta' and French 'porte' capture the architectural and metaphorical weight.
Senses
1. gate (entrance to a city, temple, or compound) — A large gate or doorway of a city, temple, or fortress — the architectural threshold through which people enter and exit. Used both literally of the temple's Beautiful Gate (Acts 3:10) and the iron gate of a city (Acts 12:10), and metaphorically of the narrow and wide gates representing life's divergent paths (Matt 7:13–14) and the gates of Hades that cannot overcome Christ's assembly (Matt 16:18). Spanish 'puerta,' French 'porte,' and German 'Tor/Pforte' all preserve both the physical and figurative dimensions of the entrance. 10×
