Richly, abundantly, in a lavish or overflowing manner.
An adverb derived from the adjective plousios (wealthy), describing the manner in which something is given or experienced -- not sparingly, but with generous abundance. Paul urges believers to let the word of Christ dwell in them 'richly' (Col 3:16), and God pours out the Spirit 'richly' through Jesus Christ (Titus 3:6). The term conveys a quality of divine generosity that overflows beyond mere sufficiency.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Richly, abundantly, in an overflowing manner. Used exclusively of divine or spiritual bounty in the NT: the indwelling word (Col 3:16), God's provision for enjoyment (1 Tim 6:17), the outpouring of the Spirit (Titus 3:6), and the rich entrance into Christ's kingdom (2 Pet 1:11). Spanish 'abundantemente' and German 'reichlich' both capture the quantitative overflow, while English 'richly' preserves the metaphorical link to wealth. Every NT occurrence connects material-wealth imagery to spiritual generosity. 4×
