Adj-AMS  |  2× in 1 sense
bitter, sharp, or harsh to taste or experience; pungent, biting
Originally describing sharp, pungent taste—bitter herbs, salt water as opposed to sweet. James uses it metaphorically for moral and spiritual realities. Can both fresh and bitter water flow from the same spring (Jas 3:11)? No—and neither should blessing and cursing flow from the same mouth. Bitter jealousy and selfish ambition (Jas 3:14) poison the heart like bitter water poisons a well. The physical sensation of bitterness becomes a picture of corrupted character—harsh, sharp, unpleasant, spoiling what should be pure.

Senses
1. sense 1 Bitter in taste or character, used by James to illustrate moral and spiritual corruption. A spring cannot produce both fresh and bitter water—it's against nature. Similarly, a heart harboring 'bitter jealousy' cannot produce genuine wisdom. The bitterness that ruins water's sweetness pictures the envy and selfish ambition that ruin character. The term appears twice in James 3 within verses about the tongue's power and wisdom's nature, both times marking incompatibility between blessing and corruption.
