πηγή G4077
Spring, fountain, source — a natural water source; figuratively, the origin of life, blessing, or defilement
The noun πηγή (pege) means a spring, fountain, or source of water. Its most theologically rich appearance is Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman, where he contrasts Jacob's well with the 'spring of water welling up to eternal life' that he gives (John 4:6, 14). Mark uses it for the hemorrhaging woman's 'source of blood' that dried up at Jesus' touch (Mark 5:29). James asks whether a spring can pour out both fresh and brackish water from the same opening (Jas 3:11-12), making it a metaphor for the tongue's inconsistency. In Revelation, springs are objects of both judgment (Rev 8:10; 14:7; 16:4) and eschatological promise — the Lamb will guide his people to 'springs of living water' (Rev 7:17; 21:6). Spanish 'fuente/manantial' and French 'source/fontaine' cover the range.
Senses
1. spring, fountain, source of water — A literal spring or fountain of water, a natural source from which water flows. Jacob's well at Sychar is called a pege (John 4:6), and Revelation's judgment visions target rivers and springs (Rev 8:10; 14:7; 16:4). The 2 Peter 2:17 description of false teachers as 'springs without water' depends on the literal sense. Spanish 'fuente/manantial' and French 'source' translate directly. 11×
