Πέργη G4011
Perga; a city in Pamphylia in southern Asia Minor, visited by Paul on his first missionary journey
Perga was a prominent city in the coastal region of Pamphylia. Paul and Barnabas arrived there after sailing from Cyprus (Acts 13:13), and it was here that John Mark left them to return to Jerusalem. Later, on their return journey, they preached the word in Perga before going down to Attalia (Acts 13:14; 14:25). Though little detail is given about ministry there, Perga marks a significant moment in Paul's mission—the departure of Mark and the pivot inland toward the Galatian highlands.
Senses
1. sense 1 — All languages transliterate the city name: English 'Perge', Spanish 'Pérgē', French 'Perga', German preserves Greek forms Πέργην/Πέργης/Πέργῃ. Abbott-Smith notes it's 'a city of Pamphylia' with LSJ having no classical entry, suggesting it's primarily a biblical/geographical term. All three occurrences are in Acts: arriving at Perga where John Mark left (Acts 13:13), passing through Perga (Acts 13:14), and preaching in Perga on the return journey (Acts 14:25). It's a geographical location on Paul's first missionary journey. 3×
