Patris (from pater, father) denotes one's native land or hometown — the place where your father's people are from. In the Synoptic Gospels, it appears almost exclusively in the proverb 'a prophet is not without honor except in his own patris,' referring to Jesus' rejection at Nazareth (Matt 13:54-57, Mark 6:1-4, Luke 4:23-24). John 4:44 echoes the same saying. But Hebrews 11:14 lifts the word to a transcendent register: the patriarchs were seeking a 'heavenly homeland,' transforming the earthy hometown into an eschatological destination. Spanish 'patria' preserves the etymological link to 'father' perfectly.
