Discipline, correction, or training -- the formative process by which a parent or God shapes character through instruction and chastening.
Paideia is one of the great words of ancient Greek culture, encompassing the entire process of raising and forming a person. In the New Testament, however, it narrows to two closely related but distinguishable uses. In Hebrews 12:5-11, the author develops an extended metaphor of God as a father who disciplines his children -- painful in the moment but producing the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Ephesians 6:4 instructs fathers to bring up children 'in the paideia and admonition of the Lord.' Meanwhile, 2 Timothy 3:16 speaks of Scripture as profitable 'for training in righteousness,' emphasizing the instructional, formative side rather than corrective chastening.
