ὁμοί-ωμα G3667
Likeness, form, appearance; a visible representation or similitude of something
A noun denoting the form, shape, or visible resemblance that one thing bears to another. Paul employs it with remarkable theological precision: humanity fell 'in the likeness of Adam's transgression' (Rom 5:14), Christ was sent 'in the likeness of sinful flesh' (Rom 8:3), and he took on 'the likeness of humanity' (Phil 2:7). The word carefully implies genuine resemblance without asserting complete identity—a crucial distinction in Christological formulation. Spanish 'semejanza' and German 'Gleichnis' both capture this 'likeness-but-not-identity' nuance.
Senses
1. likeness, form, appearance — A visible form, image, or representation that resembles something else without being identical to it. Theologically pivotal in Paul's letters: idolaters exchanged God's glory for images 'in the likeness of' mortal creatures (Rom 1:23), death reigned over those who sinned 'in the likeness of Adam's transgression' (Rom 5:14), believers are united with Christ 'in the likeness of his death' (Rom 6:5), God sent his Son 'in the likeness of sinful flesh' (Rom 8:3), and Christ took 'the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men' (Phil 2:7). The term preserves genuine resemblance while allowing ontological distinction. 6×
