1. such as, of what sort — Correlative relative pronoun meaning 'such as' or 'of what sort', used to introduce qualitative comparisons or characterizations. In its relative use it describes the quality or kind of something previously mentioned or anticipated: 'such tribulation as has not been' (Matt 24:21; Mark 13:19), 'such as the earthy one is' (1 Cor 15:48), 'such as we are in word' (2 Cor 10:11; 12:20), 'the kind of struggle you saw' (Phil 1:30), 'such an earthquake, so great' (Rev 16:18). In indirect interrogative use it asks 'of what kind/sort': 'you do not know of what spirit you are' (Luke 9:55), 'what kind of persons we were' (1 Thess 1:5), 'such persecutions as befell me' (2 Tim 3:11). Also used with adverbial force 'as though' (Rom 9:6). All multilingual glosses converge on the correlative-qualitative function: Arabic alladhi/kama, German der/die, French qui/que, Hebrew asher/ka'asher, Hindi jaisa, Korean eotteuhan, Spanish cual/cuales. 15×
