wine-drinker, one who drinks wine excessively
A person who drinks wine, particularly to excess—a drunkard or wine-bibber. The term appears in identical contexts in Matthew 11:19 and Luke 7:34, both recording the slander against Jesus: 'Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' The accusation is ironic—Jesus' critics condemned John the Baptist for asceticism (demon-possessed) and Jesus for feasting (gluttonous drunkard). Neither charge stuck, but both reveal critics' determination to reject God's messengers regardless of their lifestyle.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A wine-drinker or drunkard, one given to consuming wine. Classical usage sometimes neutral (simply one who drinks wine) but often pejorative (excessive consumption). The Gospel context is clearly slanderous—Jesus' table fellowship with sinners and participation in feasts led opponents to caricature Him as intemperate. The charge is false but strategically deployed to undermine His credibility. Cross-linguistic renderings (Spanish 'bebedor de vino,' French 'buveur de vin') capture both the literal act and its negative connotation. 2×
