οἰκέω G3611
To dwell, inhabit, reside; used of both physical habitation and the spiritual indwelling of sin or the Holy Spirit.
From oikos (house), this verb means to dwell in or inhabit a place. While its basic sense is residential, Paul transforms it in Romans 7-8 into a powerful theological metaphor. Sin 'dwells in' the believer's flesh (Rom 7:17, 18, 20), but the Spirit of God also 'dwells in' those who belong to Christ (Rom 8:9, 11). This tension between indwelling sin and indwelling Spirit is central to Pauline anthropology. The Spanish 'habita' and French 'habiter' both derive from the Latin habitare, preserving the same domestic metaphor.
Senses
1. dwell, inhabit — To reside in, inhabit, or make one's dwelling in a place or person. The literal sense of physical habitation underlies the word, but in the NT it is most striking in Paul's metaphorical use for spiritual indwelling. In Romans 7:17-20, sin is personified as an occupant that 'dwells in' the flesh, acting against the person's will. Romans 8:9-11 counters with the Spirit of God dwelling in believers, and 1 Cor 3:16 asks 'do you not know that God's Spirit dwells in you?' Spanish 'habita,' French 'habiter,' and German 'wohnen' all preserve the domestic metaphor of taking up residence, making the spiritual application all the more vivid. 9×
