Noēma captures the interior life of the mind -- what a person thinks, perceives, and purposes. Paul uses it most frequently in 2 Corinthians, where it ranges from the hardened minds of Israel that cannot perceive the glory of the new covenant (2 Cor 3:14) to every thought taken captive for Christ (2 Cor 10:5). The Philippians passage promises that God's peace will guard believers' hearts and noēmata (Phil 4:7). Yet in 2 Cor 2:11 the same word takes a darker turn, referring to Satan's calculated schemes or devices -- a reminder that mental activity can be directed toward cunning manipulation as readily as toward worship.
