1. disciple, learner A pupil, student, or committed follower of a teacher, used overwhelmingly in the NT for the followers of Jesus. With 263 total occurrences, mathētēs is the standard designation for Jesus' followers throughout the Gospels and Acts (arb talāmīḏ/tilmīḏ, deu Jünger, fra disciple, heb תַּלְמִידִים/תַּלְמִיד, hin celā/celõ, kor jejadeul/jeja, spa discípulos/discípulo). It appears in singular for individual disciples (Matt 10:24-25 a disciple is not above his teacher; John 18:15-16, 19:26-27 the beloved disciple), in genitive constructions (Matt 10:42, Luke 6:17), and in the dominant plural for the group of twelve or wider circle of followers. The term also applies to disciples of John the Baptist (Matt 9:14, 11:2) and of the Pharisees (Matt 22:16).
