Remaining, the rest; substantive adjective for the remaining persons or things of a group
A common Greek adjective meaning 'remaining' or 'the rest,' used substantively throughout the New Testament to refer to the remainder of a group. When applied to people, it designates those left over after some have been singled out -- the other wedding guests who seized the servants (Matt 22:6), the foolish virgins who came too late (Matt 25:11), or the remaining apostles who did not believe the resurrection report (Mark 16:13). When applied to things, it covers 'the rest of the matters' or 'what remains to be done,' as Paul uses it for the remaining topics he will address when he arrives (1 Cor 11:34).
Senses
1. the rest (persons) — The remaining people, the rest of a group of persons, used substantively. Spanish 'los demas' and French 'le reste' both capture this partitive sense of those left over after a subset has been identified. Jesus distinguishes the disciples from 'the rest' who receive teaching in parables (Luke 8:10); Paul refers to 'the rest of the apostles' (1 Cor 9:5); and Revelation repeatedly speaks of 'the rest of the dead' or 'the rest of her offspring' (Rev 20:5; 12:17). German 'die Uebrigen' emphasizes the 'left-over' quality -- these are the ones who remain after the principal actors have been named. 30×

2. the remaining (things) — The remaining things, the rest of the matters or objects, used substantively or attributively of non-personal referents. Mark 4:19 warns that 'the desires for the rest of the things' choke the word -- here 'the rest' refers to worldly concerns beyond wealth. Paul tells the Corinthians 'the remaining matters I will arrange when I come' (1 Cor 11:34), and addresses 'the rest' of his topics in various epistles (1 Cor 7:12; Phil 4:8). The temporal adverbial use (to loipon, 'finally/henceforth') also falls here, as in Paul's closing exhortations (2 Cor 13:11; Eph 6:10), where French 'reste' and Spanish 'demas cosas' shade toward 'what remains to be said.' 10×
