Lebbaeus; alternative or additional name for the apostle also called Thaddaeus or Simon the Zealot
An alternative name for one of the Twelve Apostles, appearing in some manuscript traditions of Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18. Textual criticism reveals complex variation: some witnesses read Θαδδαῖος (Thaddaeus), others Λεββαῖος, and some combine them. In Luke 6:15 and Acts 1:13 the same individual appears as 'Simon the Zealot' or 'Judas [son] of James.' Etymology is debated—possibly derived from Hebrew words for 'heart' (lebh). The multiple names reflect common ancient practice of bearing more than one name, complicated by manuscript transmission. Modern editions typically prefer Thaddaeus.
