Laodikeia -- Laodicea, a wealthy city in Phrygia (Asia Minor), site of one of the seven churches of Revelation
Laodikeia is the proper name of Laodicea, a prosperous Hellenistic and Roman city in the Lycus Valley of Phrygia (modern western Turkey), situated near Colossae and Hierapolis. Founded by the Seleucid king Antiochus II and named after his wife Laodice, it became wealthy through banking, black wool production, and a famous medical school. Paul expresses concern for the Laodicean believers alongside those in Colossae (Col 2:1; 4:13, 15-16), and in Revelation it is addressed as the seventh and final church, rebuked for being 'lukewarm -- neither hot nor cold' (Rev 3:14-22). Spanish Laodicea, French Laodicee, and German Laodizea preserve the toponym directly.

Senses
1. sense 1 The proper name of the city of Laodicea in the Lycus Valley of Phrygia, a wealthy trade and banking center in Roman Asia Minor. Paul mentions it in connection with the Colossian correspondence, expressing pastoral concern for its believers (Col 2:1; 4:13, 15-16) and referencing a letter 'from Laodicea' (Col 4:16). In Revelation, it is the last of the seven churches addressed, famously rebuked for spiritual complacency: 'because you are lukewarm I will spit you out of my mouth' (Rev 3:14-16). Spanish Laodicea, French Laodicee, and German Laodizea reproduce the place name uniformly.
