N-GFS  |  28× in 1 sense
Village; an unwalled rural settlement smaller than a city, typical of Galilean and Judean countryside life.
In the ancient Mediterranean world, a kome was a small, unwalled settlement distinguished from the fortified polis or city. The Synoptic Gospels use this word frequently to paint the landscape of Jesus' itinerant ministry as he traveled through the villages of Galilee and Judea, teaching and healing (Mark 6:6, 56). Spanish 'aldea' and German 'Dorf' both capture the rural, modest character of these communities. The word evokes a world of open countryside, close-knit neighbors, and agricultural life far from urban centers.

Senses
1. village (unwalled settlement) An unwalled rural settlement, smaller and less fortified than a polis (city). The Synoptic Gospels employ this term to describe the towns Jesus visited during his Galilean ministry (Matt 9:35; Mark 6:6, 36, 56). Cross-lingual glosses consistently render it as a small rural habitation: Spanish 'aldea,' French 'village,' German 'Dorf.' Classical Greek contrasted kome with polis to mark the boundary between unprotected village life and civic urban existence. 28×
