Κυρηναῖος G2956
Kurenaios -- Cyrenian; a person from Cyrene, the Greek colony in North Africa (modern Libya)
Kurenaios is a gentilicium (ethnic adjective used as a noun) meaning 'a person from Cyrene,' the major Greek colony in the North African region of Cyrenaica (modern eastern Libya). The city hosted a large and influential Jewish community. In the NT, Simon the Cyrenian is conscripted to carry Jesus' cross on the road to Golgotha (Matt 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26), making him an indelible figure in the Passion narrative. Cyrenians also appear among the Hellenistic Jewish disputants in Acts 6:9 and among the early missionaries who first preached to Gentiles at Antioch (Acts 11:20; 13:1). Spanish Cireneo, French Cyreneen, and German Kyrenaeer preserve the ethnic designation.
Senses
1. Cyrenian — An inhabitant or native of Cyrene, the Greek colonial city in North Africa with a significant Jewish diaspora population. Simon of Cyrene, pressed into service to bear Jesus' cross (Matt 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26), is the most prominent Cyrenian in the NT. Other Cyrenians appear as members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen who dispute with Stephen (Acts 6:9) and as pioneering evangelists who first proclaimed the gospel to Greek-speaking Gentiles at Antioch (Acts 11:20). Lucius of Cyrene is named among the prophets and teachers at Antioch (Acts 13:1). Spanish Cireneo and French Cyreneen render the gentilicium straightforwardly. 6×
